Northern Tokyo
Tokyo is a mixture of modern and traditional architecture, from skyscrapers to historical temples. As the capital of Japan, it is everyone's aspiration to wander in this wonderful city.
Our first take on this short escapade is the Northern Tokyo, comprised of Asakusa, Nakamise-dori, Sensoji Temple and Tokyo Skytree.
The hotel is just a five-minute walk to Asakusa. At that time, we were planning to just stroll around for a few hours. However, when arriving there, we were met with an array of stalls with jampacked crowd. You could hardly walk through. It is winter vacation, the number of people is expected, so to speak.
This is the Kaminarimon Gate, 'thunder gate', it is Asakusa's famous landmark. You will be greeted by this gigantic lantern before going to the Sensoji Temple. First built a 1000 years ago, it is a symbol of Asakusa. This temple is dedicated to Kannon, the goddess of mercy. It is the oldest and most famous temple in Tokyo.
This is the busy street of Nakamisedori. An array of shops handed down from generation to generation leads from Kaminarimon gate to Sensoji temple.
Ichigo-daifuku, a most coveted Japanese traditional sweet in this shopping street. This is not your ordinary daifuku, as you can see from the picture, it is literally gigantic, one bite is not enough. Most of the daifuku I have tasted, the ichigo or any fruit, is wrapped in mochi, but this one, the strawberry or ichigo is outside, which gives it a more delectable feature. Do not leave this street without trying this sweet snack.
Hozomon is Sensoji's main gate, which originally dates back to 10th century, but has been rebuilt multiple times like most other structures of the temple.
Tokyo Skytree is the major symbol of Tokyo. It is the tallest tower in the world, and the tallest structure in Japan. There are two decks open to public. The Tembo deck (350 m) and the Tembo Galleria (450m) which offers a remarkable view of the city, both day and night.
Panoramic view from the bridge going to Tokyo Skytree Solamachi. Maybe you are wondering what that golden poo is? It's the Asahi building headquarters.
All photos are mine.
